The Prison Stripe Print originated in New York prisonsystems in the 1820’s. The black and white stripes aremeant to offset the vertical prison bars, as well as toinsure that escaped prisoners would be immediatelyrecognizable in public. The pattern was slowly phased outof use in the mid 20th century.
