Decoding Coated Denim

Denim, unique on its own, gains more intricacies with the addition of a coating. Enter coated denim. What is it, and how do you take care of it? This guide will help you understand and treat it safely. And ensure effortless styling.

Touching on Texture

“Coated" and "waxed" are terms often used interchangeably. Waxed denim refers to the fabric treated with wax, while coated denim can have various treatments — from wax to varnish — to achieve its shiny, leather-like appearance. The latter provides denim with a unique look and feel, and also enhances its durability. Invented in the 19th century, coated denim has become a fashion statement across generations. It was originally used in sailors’ utility wear to protect against water and other weather conditions, due to its resilient qualities.
Then, in the ‘70s, the punk scene brought it back as an edgy alternative to regular denim. And by the ‘90s, with grunge on the rise, it made its appearance on the runways. Now, coated denim is loved by all, praised for its fusion of unique exterior and extreme comfort.

Styling Sheen

When it comes to coated denim, styling is effortless. For example, a pair of coated jeans can take center stage when paired with a simple gray sweater, which highlights the texture and sheen of the fabric. Alternatively, they create a striking contrast when worn with brighter colors like red or white. If you are looking to make a statement, consider pairing coated jeans with a denim jacket of the same finish. For a comfortable, elevated two-piece set that pays homage to its punk heritage.

Denim Care Central

Coated and waxed denim requires a bit of extra attention to maintain its shiny finish. Washing too often can strip the coating, so reduce frequency as much as possible. When the much-dreaded wash day arrives, be sure to use cold water, a mild detergent, and turn your jeans inside out. Preferably, wash them by hand, and soak them in water to limiting unnecessary friction. Skip the dryer — air drying is best to preserve the coating. Heat can cause denim to shrink and the coating to crack or peel. Instead, roll up your denim in a towel to soak up moisture, then lay it flat to dry. To prevent the coating from wearing down, store them folded or hung carefully without sharp creases.
