A Shot in the Dark
Dark denim in winter? Groundbreaking. As temperatures drop, we naturally gravitate towards deeper tones and richer textures. Denim transcends the classic blue washes, offering an endless variety of shades and textures to explore – from raw to black, waxed to coated. With its versatility, dark denim makes a statement and is a staple in any wardrobe.
Raw Exterior
Freshly dyed indigo and untreated, raw denim is sturdy and structured. A favorite among denim heads, raw denim is highly appreciated due to its unique aging process. Much like a bottle of wine that matures slowly and individually, a pair of raw denim jeans develops its own distinctive characteristics as it ages. Over the years, fades will start forming and the shape will mold to the wearer’s body. Making each pair truly unique to their owner. While similar effects can be achieved through washings and treatments, the individuality that comes with raw denim is unmatched.
Polished and Waxed
Raw denim is nearly synonymous with black due to its deep and intense shade of indigo. However, with the blue coming through, the textures are intensified. But if the texture of denim itself is not enough to play with, coated or waxed denim comes to the rescue. Waxed denim, invented in the 19th century, has become a fashion statement across generations. Originally used in sailors’ utility wear to protect against water and other weather conditions, waxed denim proved to be a resilient fabric. In the ‘70s, punk brought it back as an edgy alternative to regular denim. And by the ‘90s, with grunge on the rise, it made its appearance on the runways. Now, waxed denim is loved by all and is praised for its fusion of unique exterior and extreme comfort.
Styling Dark
When it comes to dark denim – whether black, raw, or coated – styling is effortless. Generally, darker colors tend to be flattering on the body and easy to match with almost anything. For example, a pair of raw denim jeans can take center stage when paired with a simple gray sweater, which highlights the texture of the fabric. Alternatively, they create a nice contrast when worn with brighter colors like red or white. The same goes for black denim. However, if you are looking to make a statement, consider pairing raw or waxed denim jeans with a jacket of the same wash, creating a two-piece set that looks elevated and feels comfortable.
Tender Loving Care
For all types of denim, it is highly recommended to wash as rarely as possible and always in cold water, but especially if it’s raw or waxed. The latter is also advised to be turned inside out and washed in a garment bag to preserve its coating. Be sparing with detergent, as using too much can fade the color sooner than you’d expect. Remember to air dry your denim – it helps preserve the fabric’s quality and prevent shrinkage.
